Lord Jesus Christ, God's Only Son
Herr Christ, der einig Gottes Sohn, by Elisabeth Creutziger
Suggested Tune: Brother James' Air, 86 86 86
["The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want"]

Lord Jesus Christ, God's only Son,
who is before was time,
the One from whom all life has spun,
creation's paradigm‚
    Arise on us, bright Morning Star!
    Your grace shine near and far.

In human flesh God's grace is born
in this, the end of time.
That we no longer mourn forlorn
Christ takes the downward climb,
    and death destroys, and opens heav'n,
    and brings us life again.

Let growth in grace, Lord, never cease;
help us redeem the time.
Let faith and hope and love increase
that word and action rhyme.
    Illume us, O Light of light;
    the fire of life ignite.

Awaken us to live by grace,
for soon prevails the time
when sin and death at last give place
to love, heav'n's paradigm.
    O Son of God, of grace the sum,
    Lord Jesus, quickly come!

You Go Alone Into The Garden
Du gehst in' Garten, um zu beten, by Johann Mentzer
Suggested Tune: Wer nur den lieben Gott, 98 98 88
["If you but suffer God to guide thee"]
Alternate: O dass ich tasend Zunge hätte (Dretzel or König)

You go alone into the garden,
there you will kneel and watch and pray.
Though night draws near and shadows darken,
Lord, let me go and with you stay.
    Let me walk with you, stride for stride;
    Let me watch with you, side by side.

You steal away from crowds and clamor,
seeking a quiet place for prayer.
I would pray too, but merely stammer;
badgering thoughts my mind impair.
    Teach me to seek a place apart;
    focus my restless, harried heart.

You lift your prayer to God, your Father,
crying out, "Abba!" like a child.
God's call made you my elder Brother;
I have, through you, been reconciled.
    "Abba!" I pray, and without fear;
    I, heart assured, to God draw near!

You in your Father's hands are placing
life, limb, and all this hour will bring.
Facing your fear, God's will embracing,
groans both your soul and body wring.
    I too would pray, "Your will be done!" ‚
    though quake the earth, though quenched the sun.

Let me go with you to the garden;
there we will kneel and watch and pray.
All-loving Lord, I beg your pardon!
I from my prayers so often stray.
    Let me pray with you, though it be
    deep in a dark Gethsemane.

This Is The Day
Erscheinen ist der herrlicher Tag, by Nikolaus Herman
Suggested Tune: Deus tuorum militum, LM
["We sing the praise of him who died"]
Alternate: Any joyful LM

This is the Day, our Day of days,
    when Christ to us the vict'ry gave.
For Christ this day triumphant rose,
    and made captivity his slave.

Today our ancient enemies –
    the serpent, sin, death's sting, and hell –
were overcome by Jesus Christ
    who rose from death alive and well.

Today death lost his stolen prey;
    to life death forfeits all his hoard.
In shards his shattered weapons lay,
    for Christ, the Victor, life restored.

Today was all creation freed
    from futile bondage and decay.
Let ev'ry creature on the earth
    join us in praising God this day.

Today, God's people, let us sing
    our "alleluias" loud and clear:
"We thank and praise you, Jesus Christ,
   you set us free from shame and fear!"

Of Itself God's Kingdom Grows
Mark 4.26-32
Suggested Tune:  Dix, 77 77 77
["For the beauty of the earth"]
Suggested Alternate Tune:  Gethsemane

Of itself God's Kingdom grows.
How, no farmer fully knows.
Latent life is in the seed;
growth will gracefully proceed.
    First the blade, and then the ear,
    then the full grain will appear.

Scattered wide on fertile field,
ev'ry kernel grain will yield.
Though so tiny seem the seed,
nothing can its growth impede.
    First the blade, and then the ear,
    then the full grain will appear.

Patience!  Ev'ry seed will grow.
Patience!  Though emerging slow,
eager life will burst the seed;
sprouting growth for human need.
    First the blade, and then the ear,
    then the full grain will appear.

Father, may your Kingdom spread!
Give to all their daily bread.
Help us sow the precious seed,
watch its growth our hopes exceed.
    First the blade, and then the ear,
    then the full grain will appear.

Psalm 46
Suggested Tune: Ein' feste Burg
["A mighty fortress is our God"]

God is our refuge, strength and light,
our help in times of trouble.
We need not tremble at the sight
of mountains ground to rubble!
  For though the mountains quake,
  though coastlands shift and shake,
  though oceans foam and rage
  though ends this present age,
our God is ever with us.

There is a river from whose streams
God's city drinks its gladness.
Each drop of sorrow God redeems,
dispelling mists of sadness.
  God's glory lights its walls,
  and darkness never falls.
  God calls each one by name,
  and they with joy proclaim,
"Our God is ever with us!"

When our God speaks the mountains melt,
and dynasties are tumbled.
The dreams which they before once knelt,
before their eyes have crumbled.
  For God cannot ignore
  the schemes to crush the poor.
  God hears their groans and sighs,
  and listens to their cries,
For God is ever with them.

"Be still and know that I am God,
acclaimed by ev'ry nation.
The world will all my works applaud
and see my great salvation.
  I make mad war to cease,
  and lead the way to peace.
  I shatter bow and spear,
  and bring an end to fear.
I will be ever with you!"

Benedictus
Luke 1.68-79
Suggested Tune: Freu dich sehr, 87 87 77 88
[“Comfort, comfort ye my people”]

Blesst are you, O God of Israel!
    You have come to set us free!
You raised up a mighty Savior,
    promised Branch of David's tree.
Through your prophets' word of old
    you this promise have foretold:
“From your foes my arm shall save you,
    ev'ry pow'r that would enslave you!‚“

You have called to mind your cov’nant,
    mercy sworn to Abram dear:
“When from enemies I free you,
    you shall worship without fear.
just and holy in my sight,
    free from death's despairing night,
free from sin that seeks to binds you,
    from the dazz'ling lies that blind you!”

O what grace, what deep compassion!
    Longed for Day, upon us rise!
Come, new Dawn, and break upon us;
    beam with mercy’s great surprise!
Light and Life upon us blaze!
    We are lost in death's dark maze!
Come to us, and walk beside us;
    show the path of Peace, and guide us.

Magnificat
Luke 1.46-55
Suggested Tune: Adoro te devote, 10 10 10 10
["Thee we adore, O hidden Savior, thee"]
Alternate: Ellers

My soul, proclaim the greatness of the Lord!
    In God, the saving God, my heart, rejoice!
For God fulfilled in me the prophets' word:
    I, last and lowest, God has made first choice.

From this day forth each age will call me bless'd!
    Almighty God for me has done great things.
O Holy God – in mercy manifest!
    Awe-struck, my soul its timeless message sings:

"Strength you have shown in this, your chosen hour:
    robbing the prancing proud of their conceit,
dragging the mighty from their seats of pow'r;
    lifting the lowly crushed beneath their feet.

You feed the hungry, filling them with food;
    sated, the rich you empty send away.
You come, O Sov'reign,, working for the good,
    bringing your blessings near before the Day."

We, Lord, now call your covenant to mind –
    the solemn promise you to Isræl swore –
that Abraham would bless all humankind:
    we, his bless'd children, bless you evermore.
All Saints’ Day

All the Saints
Suggested Tune: Merton, 87 87
["Hark, a thrilling voice is sounding"]

Rank on rank they rush to meet us
in our prayers and in our praise.
Great their joy is as they greet us,
chanting with us phrase by phrase.

When we read of Paul and Silas,
when of Stephen as he died,
we rejoice Luke took his stylus,
and made ink on parchment glide.

Still they witness to the gospel,
still their silent voice is heard.
Though their times were cruel and hostile,
they believed, and kept God’s word.

Look around you while you worship;
you might glimpse them in your pew.
They are there, your faith to stir up;
they are there to welcome you.
